An out-of-service London Overground train collided with a buffer stop at London Liverpool Street station at approximately 1am on 15 October 2026. The low-speed collision resulted in the derailment of the train and the closure of platforms 1, 2, and 3 at the UK’s busiest railway station.
Affected Operators and Service Disruptions
London Overground, Greater Anglia, and Stansted Express services have experienced delays, cancellations, and diversions due to the incident. Trains running between Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs as well as Chingford are affected, with disruptions expected to continue until at least Friday, 16 October. Reduced services for Stansted Express and Cambridge North are forecast
for 15 October between 3:15pm and 8pm.
Greater Anglia services operating between London and Cambridge North and Hertford East may be altered or diverted to Stratford due to the limited platform availability at Liverpool Street. Passengers are allowed to use their existing tickets on alternative routes, including Greater Anglia services, London Underground lines, and London buses without additional charges.
Driver Injury and Official Responses
The driver of the Overground train sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized as a precaution. According to TfL General Manager Rory O’Neill, the driver has since been discharged. O’Neill confirmed that the collision was at low speed and that a comprehensive
investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the collision.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been notified and is conducting a full investigation into the incident. Greater Anglia has issued an apology for the delays and inconvenience caused and confirmed arrangements for ticket acceptance across affected services.
Disruption Timeline and Passenger Guidance
The closure of platforms 1, 2, and 3 will remain in effect through the end of 16 October with ongoing train service disturbances during this period. Passengers on routes between Liverpool Street, Hackney Downs, and Chingford can expect delays up to 15 minutes, as well as potential cancellations or revised travel
plans.
Passengers experiencing delays of 15 minutes or longer on Greater Anglia services are eligible to claim compensation via the company’s Delay Repay scheme. Travelers are advised to consult live departure boards before traveling to adjust plans accordingly.
RAIB Investigation and Operational Impact
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch’s involvement confirms the seriousness of the collision despite its low speed. Platforms 1 to 3 remain closed, reducing available platform capacity and leading to rerouting for several Greater Anglia and Stansted Express services, particularly those servicing Stratford as an alternate terminal.
This incident has created operational challenges affecting multiple train operators at London Liverpool Street, including Greater
Anglia routes to Cambridge and Hertford East, as well as London Overground and Stansted Airport service lines.
