Tropical Storm Rachel and Hurricane Simon are forecast to impact cruise routes along Mexico’s Pacific Coast in early October 2026. Rachel is expected to approach northern Baja California and extreme southern California on the night of October 10 at tropical storm strength, while Hurricane Simon is intensifying further south and projected to make landfall as a major hurricane on Mexico’s central coast on October 11, according to the National Hurricane Center’s update at 6:30 p.m. ET on October 9.

Cruise Lines Alter Itineraries Due to Storm Threats

At least two cruise itineraries have been modified by October 9, 2026, in response to these weather threats. Carnival Cruise Line

rerouted the Carnival Radiance, canceling its scheduled visit to Cabo San Lucas on October 9 due to the impacts of Tropical Storm Rachel on sea conditions. Virgin Voyages revised the itinerary for the Brilliant Lady’s October 10 sailing, replacing scheduled stops at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta with alternate ports including Santa Barbara and San Diego in California and Ensenada in Mexico.

Passenger Compensation From Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offered financial incentives to passengers affected by the itinerary changes. Each passenger receives a $100 onboard credit and a $200 Future Voyage Credit applicable to future sailings. Those booked in RockStar and MegaRockStar accommodations

are eligible for $200 onboard credit and $300 Future Voyage Credit per person. These adjustments follow a similar itinerary change made on September 26 for the Brilliant Lady due to Hurricane Polo, a Category 5 storm.

Safety Concerns Prompt Rerouting

The port of Cabo San Lucas relies on tender boats to transfer passengers between ships anchored offshore and the shore. Rough sea conditions linked to ongoing storms have made tender operations unsafe, contributing to skipped port visits. Cruise operators prioritize passenger and crew safety in route adjustments, avoiding ports where conditions pose risks.

Official Statement and Traveler Advice

Virgin Voyages communicated to passengers by email: “After carefully considering the

latest forecast, we’ve made the decision to adjust our planned route. Your safety and the safety of our crew always come first.” The National Hurricane Center’s forecasts are critical for cruise lines to make safety-driven decisions as storm tracks and intensities evolve. Travelers on affected sailings should anticipate alterations including canceled ports and reassigned destinations.
