Southwest Airlines experienced nearly 900 flight delays and 43 cancellations nationwide by 9:15 a.m. on October 9, 2026, following a brief system outage at its vendor Amadeus. The interruption affected the airline’s reservation systems and other essential products, disrupting operations across multiple airports in the United States.
Impact at Dallas Love Field Airport
Southwest’s primary hub at Dallas Love Field faced 56 flight delays and seven cancellations by 9:15 a.m. The City of Dallas Department of Aviation spokesperson Lauren Rounds confirmed that Southwest reported an intermittent internal network outage that impaired boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning at Love Field. Despite the technical issues, the
airport’s operations were less affected compared to other locations nationwide.
During the outage, Southwest implemented manual procedures to maintain operations, including manual baggage checks and boarding to minimize disruption while working to restore full system functionality.
Official Responses and Operational Measures
A Southwest Airlines spokesperson stated the outage was caused by a brief interruption at Amadeus, the vendor that manages its reservation and related technology systems. The airline continued manual processes for baggage handling and passenger boarding during the outage.
“The airline continued to check baggage and board flights manually while full functionality was restored,” the spokesperson said. Southwest apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized
that customer and employee safety remain its highest priorities.
Lauren Rounds from the City of Dallas Department of Aviation said, “Love Field’s operations team was told by Southwest that the airline had been experiencing an intermittent internal network outage Friday morning, impacting boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning.” Flight tracking data provided by FlightAware was used to verify the counts of delays and cancellations nationwide.
