
Tamil Nadu participated in Tourism Expo Japan 2026, held in Tokyo from September 24 to 27, to promote its cultural heritage and tourism offerings to the Japanese travel market. The Tamil Nadu Tourism booth was inaugurated by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan; Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary to the Government, Tamil Nadu Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department; Mr. Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and DG, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary, Tourism, Government of Rajasthan.
Buddhist Heritage and Ecological Diversity
Tamil Nadu highlighted its shared Buddhist heritage with Japan, emphasizing historic connections through figures such as
Bodhidharma, linked to Kancheepuram and East Asian Buddhist traditions. The state presented its diverse ecological landscapes as depicted in Sangam literature, covering five distinct regions: Kurinji (hilly and mountainous), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid). These regions provide varied biodiversity and cultural experiences for visitors.
Tourism Promotion Initiatives and Familiarisation Trip
To engage international stakeholders, Tamil Nadu launched registrations for Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27, a curated familiarisation trip scheduled for January 12 to 20, 2027, coinciding with the Pongal festival. Up to 10 international participants including social media influencers, travel media professionals, agents, and tour operators will be selected to
experience the state’s tourism products and promote them globally. Additionally, Tamil Nadu conducted a roadshow in Osaka to further strengthen ties with the Japanese travel industry.
Cultural Events and Heritage Sites
Tamil Nadu showcased its seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and major cultural events like the Indian Dance Festival, Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival, Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival, and Pongal celebrations featuring Jallikattu. The state is actively developing adventure, rural, medical, wellness, and eco-tourism segments. Its coastline extends nearly 1,076 kilometres, offering significant potential for water sports and coastal tourism. Emerging destinations include Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yercaud, complementing established attractions such as
the Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, and Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserves.
Investment Opportunities and Tourism Infrastructure
During the expo, Tamil Nadu presented investment and partnership opportunities across heritage hospitality, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and experiential travel sectors. Discussions were held with Japanese travel trade representatives to explore customised travel experiences and increase tourist arrivals from Japan. The state’s initiatives support the expansion of its tourism network with a focus on environmental and cultural sustainability.
Cultural Crafts and Traditional Offerings
Highlights of Tamil Nadu’s cultural tourism include traditional dance forms, folk arts, distinctive regional cuisine, and handicrafts comprising brass and bronze products, sarees, embroidery, jewellery, and pottery. The state boasts 74 Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged
products, reflecting its rich regional crafts and specialties valued by international markets.
Engagement with Japanese Travel Market
Tamil Nadu used Tourism Expo Japan 2026 to strengthen its relationship with the Japanese travel industry, targeting growth in tourist arrivals and the development of tailored travel products for Japanese visitors. The participation also reinforced cultural and spiritual tourism links, leveraging historical Buddhist connections. These efforts aim to expand Tamil Nadu’s presence in Japan while adhering to environmentally and culturally sustainable tourism principles, according to officials from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
