Tamil Nadu participated in Tourism Expo Japan 2026 held in Tokyo from September 24 to 27, presenting its heritage, landscapes, culture, and tourism experiences to Japanese travel trade representatives and visitors. The state leveraged the event to promote its Buddhist heritage, cuisine, festivals, and emerging tourism products.

Tamil Nadu Booth Inauguration by Indian and State Officials

The Tamil Nadu Tourism pavilion at the expo was inaugurated by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan, accompanied by Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department. Mr. Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Government

of India, and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary, Tourism, Government of Rajasthan, also participated in the inauguration.

Shared Buddhist Heritage and Ecological Diversity

Dr. S. Swarna highlighted the historical Buddhist connections linking Tamil Nadu and Japan, noting the opportunity for Japanese travelers to experience Tamil Nadu’s heritage firsthand. She referenced Tamil Nadu’s roots in the ancient Sangam literary tradition, which describes five distinct ecological landscapes: Kurinji (hilly and mountainous), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid). Each landscape offers specific biodiversity and cultural experiences ranging from hill trekking to coastal life.

International Promotion and Familiarisation Trip

Tamil Nadu Tourism announced registrations for the Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27,

a curated familiarisation trip scheduled from January 12 to 20, 2027, coinciding with the Pongal and festival season. The trip invites up to 10 international social media influencers, travel journalists, media representatives, travel agents, tour operators, and destination management companies to explore and promote Tamil Nadu’s tourism offerings.

Tourism Products and Cultural Festivals

At the expo, Tamil Nadu presented its tourism portfolio including seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, cultural festivals such as the Indian Dance Festival, Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival, and Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival, and major cultural celebrations like Pongal with Jallikattu. The state highlighted investment and partnership opportunities in heritage hospitality,

eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and experiential travel.

Geographical diversity was emphasized with nearly 1,076 kilometers of coastline promoting water sports and coastal tourism, alongside developing hill destinations like Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yercaud. Wildlife and biosphere reserves including the Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, and Gulf of Mannar offer nature-based tourism including safaris and trekking.

Historical Connections and Tourism Strategy

Tamil Nadu underscored its historical port cities—Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Poompuhar—known for Buddhist traditions and maritime exchanges across Asia. The state’s association with Bodhidharma, a figure linked to Kancheepuram and East Asian Buddhism, exemplifies its spiritual ties with Japan. This cultural affinity supports the expansion of spiritual and Buddhist

tourism, fostering educational and people-to-people exchanges.

Engagement with Japanese Market and Sustainability Goals

Tamil Nadu conducted discussions with Japanese travel trade representatives to increase tourist arrivals and to develop customized travel experiences. The state aims to expand its market presence while adhering to commitments toward environmentally and culturally sustainable tourism. Participation in Tourism Expo Japan 2026 and related roadshows in Osaka form part of Tamil Nadu’s strategy to strengthen its engagement with Japan’s travel industry and to broaden its international tourism network.
