The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) took place from October 6 to 8, 2026, at the Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum in Nairobi, Kenya, drawing more than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries. The event hosted over 400 exhibitors including airlines, hotels, tour operators, technology firms, and tourism organizations. Notably, the Akwaaba African Travel Market participated again as an exhibitor after its debut in 2025.
Event Scale and Historical Attendance
The 2026 edition of MKTE surpassed previous years in size and scope. Kenya Tourism Board data showed the 2025 expo involved 7,691 delegates, 365 exhibitors, and facilitated 10,852 business-to-business meetings. The 2026 event aimed
to deepen international market presence and expand tourism business generated by Kenya, supporting the country’s goal of reaching five million international visitors by 2027. The expo’s theme was “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism.”
Buyer-Supplier Composition and Digital Focus
The expo convened a broad range of stakeholders in the tourism value chain. Hosted buyers included destination management companies, incentive buyers, independent agents, online booking platforms, and outbound tour operators focusing on Africa. Suppliers comprised hotels, lodges, camps, villas, airlines, officers from tourism boards, transport companies, and tour operators. Central to discussions was the increasing influence of digital channels and artificial intelligence
in travel discovery, comparison, and booking processes.
MICE Growth and Event Side Activities
Kenya’s expanding meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector was highlighted at MKTE, leveraging Nairobi’s conference infrastructure and connectivity. The three-day expo incorporated a United Nations Tourism Investment Forum on October 7 to foster investment discussions alongside trade activities. Post-expo, hosted buyers embarked on five-day familiarisation trips to experience Kenyan tourism destinations directly.
Akwaaba African Travel Market’s Role and Recognition
Akwaaba African Travel Market, West Africa’s premier travel event attracting over 3,000 tourism professionals from 20 African countries, returned to MKTE in 2026. Established 22 years ago, Akwaaba’s 23rd edition is scheduled for September 5 to 7, 2027 in Lagos,
