Holland America announced multiple itinerary changes for the Zaandam’s 35-day “Legendary Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas” sailing departing October 15, 2026. The revisions affect port calls and voyage timing.
Revised Port Calls in French Polynesia and Kiribati Cancellation
Zaandam will swap its French Polynesia calls, visiting Raiatea on November 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Bora Bora on November 4 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., replacing the original dates. This makes Zaandam the only ship in port during both visits.
The ship will no longer call at Tabuaeran (Fanning Island), Kiribati, scheduled for October 29, 2026. Two extra hours have been added to Kahului on October 24
and Moorea on November 6 to compensate.
Operational Speed Adjustments and Impact on Itinerary
Adjustments to Zaandam’s planned operating speed require canceling Tabuaeran and adjusting time spent in other ports. Holland America stated, “Adjustments to the ship’s planned operating speed will be required during portions of the voyage. As a result, we will no longer call at Tabuaeran (Fanning Island), Kiribati, on Thursday, October 29, and have adjusted the time spent in certain ports.”
Previous Propulsion Issues on Zaandam
On its June 3, 2026 Alaska sailing, Zaandam experienced propulsion difficulties causing cancellations at Skagway and Ketchikan and omitting Glacier Bay. The captain said, “We’re dealing with a technical issue affecting one of
our propulsion systems, which means we’re unable to sail at our normal speed.” The June 10 voyage also had delays and a shortened itinerary.
Passenger Compensation and Onboard Experience
Passengers on the October 15, 2026 sailing will receive a $100 non-refundable shipboard credit. Zaandam’s guest capacity is 1,432 compared to Silver Whisper’s 388. The exclusive single-ship visits at Raiatea and Bora Bora aim to reduce crowding.
Official Statements and Passenger Concerns
Holland America said the revised French Polynesia schedule provides greater access and experiences ashore. The captain’s propulsion issue statement highlighted the need for speed adjustments. Passengers have concerns about mechanical issues on the remote 9,400-mile Pacific route, with some
noting recent hurricane activity related to El Niño.
Industry Context on Cruise Itinerary Adjustments
Port cancellations and itinerary changes like these are common in cruise operations. Holland America’s updates show the balance of operational, technical, and guest experience factors. Travelers booked on this sailing must consult the revised itinerary for port day and time changes.
