A trackside fire on Sunday, 27 September 2026, near Clapham Junction in London damaged signalling equipment on the railway line between Clapham Junction and London Victoria station. This caused major disruptions to train services the following day.
Affected Train Services and Routes
Southern and Gatwick Express trains operating in and out of London Victoria experienced cancellations and delays. Services between Clapham Junction and London Victoria were severely disrupted, with trains subject to cancellations, delays of up to 60 minutes, diversions, or revised timetables. Thameslink services were also affected on routes including Sutton, East Croydon, Selhurst, and London Bridge. Gatwick Express operations between London Victoria and
Gatwick Airport were suspended, although coach services to the airport continued.
Schedule and Repair Efforts
Several train cancellations occurred between 10:30am and 1pm on Monday, 28 September. Southern Rail expected normal service to resume on routes from London Victoria to Eastbourne and Ore from 4:24pm the same day. Emergency engineering teams worked overnight and continued repairs throughout Monday to fix the signalling faults caused by the fire. An “extremely reduced” train service operated at London Victoria until at least midday, with disruption extended from an initial estimate of 2pm to 4pm.
Passenger Impact and Ticketing Measures
Passengers were advised to allow an extra 60 minutes travel time on affected
routes and to use alternative rail and bus services when possible. Tickets for Gatwick Express and Southern services were accepted on London Underground lines, London Overground, and alternative Southern and Thameslink trains at no extra cost. London Buses, C2C, and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) also accepted valid tickets for travel via reasonable alternative routes.
Official Statements and Additional Disruptions
Southern and Gatwick Express stated: “On Sunday, 27 September, there was a fire next to the track in the Clapham Junction area. The fire caused damage to the signalling equipment on the route and repairs are ongoing. As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and
London Victoria may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, diverted or revised.” National Rail warned of major disruption until at least 4pm on Monday and advised passengers to use alternative London terminals and allow extra travel time.
Additional disruptions on the London Underground included severe delays on the District Line between Tower Hill and Upminster caused by an earlier fire alert at Plaistow. The Victoria Line experienced severe delays due to a signal failure at Brixton. A passenger medical emergency led to partial suspension of the Northern Line between Edgware and Camden Town, unrelated to the fire. Signal
faults also caused reduced speed operation and service revisions on trains between Streatham and Tulse Hill.
Widespread Travel Disruption
The fire damage to signalling near Clapham Junction triggered widespread travel chaos across London’s rail network, affecting services to destinations including Brighton, Bognor Regis, and Ore. The disruption involved multiple rail operators beyond Southern and Gatwick Express, with ongoing emergency repairs extending through Monday afternoon and evening.
