The UK government will take public ownership of Avanti West Coast rail services operating between London and Scotland starting March 7, 2027. The current operator is a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia that has run the West Coast Main Line (WCML) corridor for seven years.
Performance Issues Prompt Nationalisation
The decision follows a period marked by chronic delays, cancellations, overcrowding, and widespread service disruption under private management. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander cited these persistent operational failures as the justification for the public takeover.
Infrastructure and Investment Challenges Along WCML
However, these disruptions are also attributed to infrastructure problems and long-term underinvestment on the West Coast Main Line, which connects
London to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and other major Scottish cities. The government aims to redirect management fees from private shareholders back into network reliability and service upgrades post-nationalisation.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the government will nationalise Avanti West Coast services at the expiration of the current contract in March 2027. Prime Minister Andy Burnham criticized the private operator’s performance, stating, “For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti’s cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service that has failed them time and time again.” Andy Mellors, Managing Director of Avanti West Coast, said the company was “proud of what
we’ve achieved over the last six years” including fleet refurbishments and increased service frequency, and committed to a smooth transition while focusing on customers.
This public takeover will be the twelfth train operator nationalised in the UK since the government’s plan to complete all public ownership transfers by the end of 2027. Great Western Railway was the most recent operator brought into public hands in December 2026.
Routes Affected and Passenger Impact
Avanti West Coast operates key routes along the West Coast Main Line connecting London Euston to Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as services to Holyhead in Wales. Passengers using these London-Scotland services will
experience the transition to government operation starting in March 2027 as part of the broader strategy to consolidate railway services under public control.
