Brightline, Florida’s high-speed passenger rail service, is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as of September 2026, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. Since beginning testing in 2017, the railroad has been linked to 227 fatalities as of September 15, 2026. The rail service’s financial challenges follow intense scrutiny over safety issues tied to these deaths.
The Brightline train reaches speeds up to 125 mph and is the only privately owned and operated passenger railroad in the United States, having opened to the public in 2018. A $6 billion expansion completed in 2023 connected Miami
and Orlando, the railroad’s two major Florida cities. In July 2026, Brightline reported a 13% increase in ridership year-over-year with 289,388 total passengers and an average daily ridership of 9,335. Revenue showed a corresponding 13% growth compared to July 2025.
Safety records reveal that 158 of the 182 fatalities reported by July 2025 involved pedestrians or bicyclists. The average frequency of fatal incidents was once every 13 days. Despite Brightline’s estimate that over half of the deaths resulted from suicide, investigative reports found the figure closer to 41%. By comparison, Brightline’s fatality rate significantly exceeds that of the busiest U.S.
commuter rail line, the Long Island Rail Road in New York.
Federal funding of approximately $57.5 million was approved in August 2026 for a new Brightline station in Cocoa, Florida, with an additional $27.5 million contributed by state and local governments. Brightline will manage the facility upon completion. Financial restructuring plans aim to reduce Brightline’s debt from about $5.5 billion to roughly $2.7 billion, according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal.
The planned bankruptcy filing reportedly excludes Brightline’s operating company, indicating that rail service is expected to continue without disruption. No announcements have been made regarding service reductions,
station closures, or scheduled operational changes as of September 2026.
“For July 2026, total ridership was 289,388, up 13% year-over-year, with average daily ridership of 9,335,” Brightline stated in its monthly revenue and ridership report.
