BEML Limited was awarded a contract exceeding ₹5,400 crore by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for the supply, maintenance, and related work of high-speed rolling stock on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. This contract significantly strengthens BEML’s order book and its role in India’s indigenous high-speed rail development.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor Overview
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor spans 508 kilometers across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It features twelve planned stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. Originally, the project utilized Japanese Shinkansen technology supported by technical and
financial assistance from the Government of Japan.
Due to rising costs and customized requirements, the Ministry of Railways shifted focus toward domestic manufacturing under the Make in India initiative, promoting local companies to develop and supply the high-speed train components.
BEML’s Indigenous B28 Rolling Stock and Manufacturing
BEML, in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), developed the B28 high-speed train rolling stock at the Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru. The B28 model is engineered for a maximum test speed of 280 kmph, with operational speeds planned to exceed 250 kmph. Trial runs of these trainsets are scheduled to commence between May and June 2027.
Related Contracts and Project Cost Updates
In
early September 2026, BEML also secured a ₹180.60 crore contract from the Integral Coach Factory for the supply of Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets. Meanwhile, the overall cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was estimated at ₹2.1 lakh crore as of late August 2026, reflecting a doubling from original projections.
The planned inaugural operation includes a 100-kilometer run between Surat and Vapi starting in August 2027.

This ₹5,400 crore NHSRCL contract boosts BEML’s order backlog to more than ₹16,000 crore, providing multi-year revenue visibility. It underscores BEML’s position as a key domestic supplier driving India’s railway modernization and the indigenization
