Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has secured a ₹5,400 crore contract from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for supplying, maintaining, and managing allied works related to rolling stock on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. This contract strengthens BEML’s position as a key domestic supplier in India’s high-speed rail development.
B28 Rolling Stock Specifications and Manufacturing
BEML is manufacturing the indigenous B28 rolling stock designed for maximum test speeds of 280 kmph and an operational speed above 250 kmph. The trains are being produced at BEML’s Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru. Trial runs of the B28 high-speed trains are scheduled to commence between
May and June 2027.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Details
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor spans 508 kilometers and features 12 stations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. NHSRCL is the implementing agency for this corridor, which is India’s first bullet train project. The Government of Japan supports the project through technical and financial assistance. As of August 2026, the project cost estimate rose to ₹2.1 lakh crore. An inaugural 100 km run between Surat and Vapi is expected in August 2027.
Previous Contracts and Make in India Initiative
In early September 2026, BEML won a ₹180.60 crore contract from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for Vande
Bharat sleeper trainsets. Under the Make in India initiative, domestic companies like BEML and ICF developed indigenous high-speed rolling stock, reducing reliance on imported Japanese Shinkansen technology and addressing the high costs associated with it.
