The United States received nearly 3.1 million visitors in August 2026, marking an 11.8% decrease compared to August 2025, according to data released by the National Travel and Tourism Office. This decline followed a 7% drop in inbound tourism recorded in July 2026, reflecting a continuing downturn in summer visitor arrivals.

Regional Visitor Numbers Decline Across All Areas

The decrease in arrivals affected all regions, with the most significant reductions from Africa, Central America, and Western Europe. Visitor numbers from Africa fell by 25.5%, Central America by 20.6%, and Western Europe by 14.8% in August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

Expected Summer Visitor Trends Fall Short Due to World Cup Shortfall

The inbound tourism figures

for summer 2026 failed to meet industry expectations, with the number of visitors connected to the World Cup event coming in below forecasts. This shortfall contributed to the overall lower volume of international visitors during the peak travel season.
