Air Canada has introduced a pilot biometric boarding system featuring four facial-recognition e-gates at Toronto Pearson International Airport, allowing passengers to enroll through the airline’s mobile app. This system enables travelers to verify their identities by comparing a live facial image with stored records, potentially eliminating the need for physical passports and boarding passes upon boarding on domestic and transborder US-bound flights.
Biometric System Components and Enrollment Process
The pilot consists of one biometric gate serving domestic flights and three gates supporting US-bound passengers in the transborder area at Pearson. Domestic travelers opt in via the Air Canada mobile app before arriving at the gate, where
cameras capture a live image compared against the traveler’s identity gallery maintained by Air Canada. The three transborder gates use preclearance images recorded during US border formalities at Pearson, removing the requirement for separate enrollment before boarding.
Dormakaba supplies the biometric gate equipment for this pilot. Middleware software enabling communication between biometric hardware and identity databases is provided by Airsphere and SITA. Air Canada administers the domestic traveler enrollment system and manages the digital identity gallery used to validate facial recognition matches. Participation in the pilot remains voluntary, with traditional document checks continuing in parallel.

Toronto Pearson International Airport currently
processes approximately 47 million passengers annually. The airport anticipates passenger volumes increasing to 65 million by the early 2030s. This biometric gate initiative forms part of a broader modernization strategy by Pearson, focusing on adopting digital identity technologies and automated processing solutions to handle rising traveler numbers efficiently.
Pilot Background and Related Canadian Biometric Deployments
The current pilot builds on Air Canada’s earlier efforts to integrate mobile app enrollment with facial recognition boarding processes. Similar biometric onboarding strategies have been trialed previously at Calgary Airport, employing selfie-based identity verification. These pilots demonstrate viable models for mobile and government-trusted identity sources to enable automated passenger processing at airport
boarding gates.
