The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for flights bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on Sunday morning, September 13, 2026, due to thunderstorms in the New York region. The ground stop lasted from 8:18 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.

After the ground stop was lifted at 12:15 p.m., flights departing JFK faced average delays of 15 minutes as of 3:30 p.m. These delays were caused by weather-related traffic management initiatives implemented by the FAA to ensure safety amid the storm.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms led to flooding and travel impacts across portions of the New York

metropolitan area on Sunday morning. These weather conditions prompted the FAA’s decision to halt departures to JFK Airport during the affected hours.
