These flight interruptions coincided with the Labor Day weekend period, traditionally marked by high passenger volumes. Airlines responded by issuing travel waivers permitting passengers to rebook flights without penalties due to weather-related cancellations and delays. Flight operations remained impacted by the severe weather and regulatory restraints.

The storm system represents a rare multiday severe thunderstorm event affecting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions continuously on September 1, 2, and 3.

Recent East Coast aviation disturbances have been compounded by similar weather events, including Tropical Storm Edouard in late August, contributing to cascading delays. Ground stops and ground-delay programs generate ripple effects by grounding crews and aircraft, prolonging disruptions after weather clearance.
