The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at 10 U.S. airports on September 3, 2026, as severe thunderstorms caused widespread disruptions across the Northeast corridor. The ground stops halted all departures at affected airports, including major hubs in the New York metro area.

Delays at New York and Boston Airports

LaGuardia Airport in New York reported an average ground delay of 45 minutes on September 3. Newark Airport experienced longer delays, reaching peaks of two hours. John F. Kennedy Airport also implemented ground-delay programs during the storm. Boston Logan International Airport recorded 19 separate flight delays amid the same thunderstorm system. The FAA explained that ground

stops are issued for short-term severe weather when insufficient data exists to initiate full Ground Delay Programs.

Unprecedented Multi-Day Weather Disruption

The severe thunderstorms persisted for three consecutive days from September 1 through 3, creating an unusual and continuous disruption of air traffic in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. This multiday storm stretched the national air traffic network to minimal operational reserves and caused cascading cancellations and delays. Thunderstorms affected flights not just in New York and Boston, but also in Philadelphia and Washington, generating restrictions that impacted air traffic nationwide.

Travel Impacts During Labor Day Weekend

Flight disruptions compounded travel challenges during the busy Labor Day weekend. Airlines responded

by issuing travel waivers permitting passengers to change bookings without penalty. The ongoing weather situation contributed to delays and cancellations during a period of typically high passenger demand.

Ongoing Monitoring of Airspace Conditions

The FAA continues to update its National Airspace System Status page with real-time information on active delays and ground stops at Northeast airports. Recent severe weather events, including Tropical Storm Edouard in late August, have contributed to a pattern of increased thunderstorms disrupting East Coast aviation in the summer and early fall months.
