India’s Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, the nation’s first high-speed rail initiative funded by ₹1.1 lakh crore from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is approaching operational readiness nearly a decade after its foundation stone was laid. The initial segment between Surat and Bilimora is expected to open in late 2026, while full completion remains targeted for 2030. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) leads development with support from Japanese technology.
Train Design, Manufacturing, and Features
Trainsets are arriving from Japan, while Indian Railways, through the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is producing bullet trains using stainless steel. BEML Limited received a contract worth
₹866.87 crore to design, manufacture, and commission two prototype eight-coach high-speed trainsets, known as B-28, capable of speeds up to 280 kmph. Each domestically built train is projected to cost between ₹390 crore and ₹400 crore. Passenger amenities include fully air-conditioned chair cars, reclining and rotatable seats, infotainment systems, and dedicated facilities for differently-abled passengers.
Infrastructure Adaptations and Project Progress
BEML’s ‘Aditya’ High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru has been established exclusively for bullet train production, utilizing precision-driven technologies tailored for India’s tropical monsoon climate. These trains are designed to withstand heat and dust, differentiating them from models built for cooler climates like Japan and Europe.
The project has experienced delays due to land acquisition, statutory clearances, and finalisation of train designs.
Expansion Plans and Future Speeds
Indian Railways plans seven additional high-speed rail corridors, including routes between Bengaluru and Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the next generation of bullet trains is being designed to reach speeds of 350 kmph, exceeding the current operational capability of 280 kmph.
