A man was reported missing after falling overboard from the Ambassador Cruise Line vessel MS Ambition near the Scottish coast on August 21, 2026. The incident occurred between 8:35 a.m. and 8:55 a.m., approximately 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus, and around 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife, in the North Sea. MS Ambition was carrying around 1,000 people and was on a solar eclipse cruise sailing from Lerwick, Shetland, to Dundee.

Coordinated Search and Rescue Operation

A large-scale sea search and rescue effort was launched following the man overboard report. Police Scotland, HM Coastguard, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the Maritime and Coastguard

Agency, and local lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry participated in the operation. Coastguard aircraft scrambled from Prestwick and Carlisle provided aerial support, while helicopters and lifeboats aided in the search over the North Sea.

Recovery and Identification

Later on August 21, the body of the missing man was recovered. Police Scotland confirmed the recovery but stated formal identification had not been completed at the time of reporting. The family of the man was informed about developments. Police Scotland spokesperson said, “Around 8.55am on Friday, August 21, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship

in the North Sea, 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife. A search and rescue operation, carried out by police and partner agencies, has been ongoing, and a body has been recovered. Formal identification is yet to take place; however, the family of the man who was reported missing has been informed.”

Passenger and Ship Response

Passengers aboard MS Ambition were briefly held onboard while the search was underway. After arrival in Dundee, a thorough ship-wide search was conducted. The ship docked later on August 21, and guests were permitted to disembark around 11:30 a.m. A spokesperson for Ambassador Cruise Line said the captain reported

the missing person incident soon after discovery and kept guests informed. The company confirmed the ship followed international maritime safety and search protocols. Passengers experienced a slight delay during the turnaround operation in Dundee, but subsequent travelers were advised to proceed to the port as scheduled.

Official Statements and Cruise Context

Ambassador Cruise Line stated: “The Captain of Ambition reported a missing person incident earlier this morning. The ship, now berthed in Dundee, was on passage from Lerwick to Dundee when the alarm was raised after it was found that a guest was not where they were expected to be. Guests on board have been

kept informed of developments by the captain, and a thorough ship-wide search was carried out on arrival in Dundee. Having initially been asked to remain on board while the search was carried out, guests have now been cleared to disembark.” The company works closely with rescue agencies including the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard, and Police Scotland.

MS Ambition was on a solar eclipse cruise with stops that included Shetland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands before returning to Dundee. The ship had previously been chartered by the Scottish government to provide temporary housing for Ukrainian

refugees. The cruise industry follows strict international maritime safety standards, which were applied during this incident.
