A man reportedly fell overboard from the Ambassador Cruise Line vessel MS Ambition between 8:35 am and 8:55 am on 21 August 2026 in the North Sea, approximately 36 to 40 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus, and near Anstruther, Fife, off the east coast of Scotland.

Search and Rescue Operation and Recovery

The incident triggered a major search and rescue mission coordinated by HM Coastguard, with involvement from Police Scotland, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, as well as aerial support including helicopters and planes, participated in the efforts. Later on 21 August

2026, the body of the man was recovered. Although formal identification has yet to be completed, the man’s family has been informed.

Passenger Impact and Ship Movements

The MS Ambition, carrying around 1,000 passengers on a solar eclipse cruise from Lerwick in Shetland to Dundee, initially held passengers on board during the search operation. After docking at Dundee, passengers were allowed to disembark around 11:30 am following a thorough ship-wide search. The cruise ship later resumed its scheduled journey from Dundee to Newcastle on the evening of the same day.

Official Statements from Authorities and Company

Police Scotland confirmed the report of the man overboard and subsequent recovery of the body.

A police spokesperson stated, “Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea.” Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed the captain reported the missing person and noted full cooperation with maritime authorities, emphasizing adherence to international maritime safety protocols and their commitment to guest safety and wellbeing.

Cruise Context and Background

The MS Ambition had been conducting a two-week solar eclipse cruise, which included stops at Shetland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands prior to this voyage from Lerwick to Dundee. The ship has previously been chartered by the Scottish government

to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. The cause of the man going overboard was not disclosed by any source.
