The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for flights arriving at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on the evening of August 21, 2026, as severe storms approached the Chicago region. The ground stop was expected to hold flights at their departure airports through 6:30 p.m. local time.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were active for several counties in the Chicago area, with much of the region also under a severe thunderstorm watch. The weather conditions prompted the FAA to halt inbound flights temporarily to manage operational safety.
Flight Delays and Operational Impact
Flights scheduled to depart from O’Hare experienced average delays of 45 minutes due to
the weather-related ground stop and subsequent disruptions. The FAA indicated plans to transition from the ground stop to a Ground Delay Program as the storm conditions evolved.
The combination of grounded arrivals and weather delays contributed to congestion on airport taxiways and crowded gates. Flight operations at O’Hare were disrupted during the evening hours, causing a ripple effect in airline scheduling and airport logistics.
