The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops on August 6, 2026, at nine airports in the Northeastern United States. Delta Air Lines issued travel warnings for these locations, anticipating flight delays and cancellations as thunderstorms move through the area.
Severe Thunderstorms Forecasted Across New York and New Jersey
Thunderstorms with the potential for damaging wind gusts were forecast to affect New York and New Jersey beginning in the afternoon and persisting into the evening on August 6, 2026. The adverse weather prompted the FAA to restrict air traffic at multiple regional airports.
LaGuardia and Newark See Highest Cancellations
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) recorded the highest number of flight cancellations nationally, with 37 departures and 27
arrivals cancelled earlier in the week, increasing to 43 cancellations as of early morning August 6. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) ranked second among U.S. airports with 27 cancellations earlier in the week. These totals reflect ongoing disruptions caused by weather and operational challenges.
Aviation Challenges Include Weather, Air Traffic, and Staffing
Flight delays at New York area airports arose from the expected thunderstorms and additional air traffic control restrictions. On August 5, the FAA reported nearly three hours of ground delays at LaGuardia Airport. Delta Air Lines also experienced staffing problems; flight DL2396 was delayed after being assigned only one pilot, causing further hold-ups.
Delta’s Traveler Advisories and Rebooking Options
Delta Air Lines
warned customers of possible disruptions through travel advisories for nine Northeast hubs. The airline offers rebooking without change fees for affected flights on August 6 and 7, 2026. To qualify, rebooked travel must occur on or before August 10 in the same cabin and destination initially booked. Delta stated, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”
Passengers
have reported delayed flights and disruptions prior to the August 6 thunderstorms. Customer Mark Haubry tweeted about over two-hour delays on a flight between Indianapolis and LaGuardia due to air traffic. Another Delta passenger, Rudi Bester, cited a staffing shortage causing delays on flight DL2396.
Major U.S. airlines, including Delta and JetBlue, expect ongoing delays and cancellations in the Northeast as severe weather continues, driven by FAA ground stops and operational complications.
