The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued ground stops at nine airports across the Northeastern United States on August 6, 2026, in response to severe weather conditions forecast for the region. Delta Air Lines has released travel warnings and announced rebooking options for passengers at these affected hubs amid anticipated flight disruptions.
Multiple Cancellations and Delays at LaGuardia and Newark Airports
Flight cancellations and delays are concentrated at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), two major Northeast gateways. On Wednesday, LaGuardia experienced 37 flight departure cancellations and 27 arrival cancellations, while Newark recorded 27 cancellations. Early on Thursday morning, LaGuardia’s cancellations increased to 43, with additional
cancellations expected as thunderstorms approach the New York City area.
Thunderstorm Forecast and Air Traffic Challenges
The FAA’s ground stops follow forecasts of thunderstorms with potential damaging wind gusts moving through New York and New Jersey this afternoon and evening. These weather conditions have prompted preemptive measures to manage air traffic safely. Alongside the weather, air traffic control delays and staffing shortages have further contributed to disruptions at Northeast airports.
Passenger Delays and Staffing Issues Affect Specific Flights
Passengers have reported lengthy delays throughout the region, particularly at LaGuardia Airport. Delta flight DL2396 from LaGuardia to Palm Beach International Airport was delayed because only one pilot was available, a staffing issue noted by travelers.
On social media, passenger Mark Haubry reported over two-hour delays on flights from Indianapolis to LaGuardia due to air traffic congestion, underscoring the operational challenges inflight already present before the incoming thunderstorms.
Delta Rebooking Policy and Official Statements
Delta Air Lines has responded by waiving change fees for rebookings made on or before August 10, 2026, for travel on August 6 and 7, 2026, provided the rebooked itinerary remains in the same cabin and to the same destination. According to Delta, fare differences may apply if the original booking class is not maintained. Aviation expert JonNYC noted on social media that Delta anticipates “significant ATC delays
in NYC Thursday” and is assembling a cancellation package to address weather-driven disruptions.
Delta’s policy targets the nine Northeastern hubs affected by the FAA’s ground stops, facilitating flexibility for travelers facing cancellations or extended delays. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact on passengers navigating travel through New York, New Jersey, and surrounding airports on August 6 and 7.
