The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops today on August 6, 2026, at nine airports across the U.S. Northeast due to approaching thunderstorms and damaging wind gusts forecasted for New York and New Jersey. These weather conditions are expected to cause ongoing flight delays and cancellations through Thursday evening, affecting air traffic control operations in the region.
Cancellations Concentrated at LaGuardia and Newark Airports
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York reported the highest number of cancellations nationwide amid the disruptions, with 43 flights cancelled as of early Thursday morning. On Wednesday, the airport recorded 37 departure and 27 arrival cancellations. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in
New Jersey followed with 27 cancellations on Wednesday, the second highest among U.S. airports. The numbers are expected to increase throughout the day as thunderstorms move into the New York metropolitan area.
Delta Air Lines Issues Travel Warnings and Flexible Rebooking
In response to the FAA ground stops and anticipated weather disruptions, Delta Air Lines issued travel warnings for nine Northeast airports, including its major hubs at LaGuardia and Newark. The airline is offering customers the option to rebook flights for travel on August 6 and 7, 2026, without change fees, provided the new travel occurs in the same cabin and destination as originally booked. Tickets must be reissued
by August 10, 2026, to qualify for waived fare differences. A Delta official stated, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”
Passenger Delays Linked to Air Traffic Control and Staffing Issues
Delta passengers experienced lengthy delays ahead of the incoming severe weather, particularly at LaGuardia. On Wednesday, FAA air traffic control delays reached nearly three hours at LGA. Passenger Mark Haubry reported a delay exceeding two hours
on a flight from Indianapolis to LaGuardia due to air traffic congestion. Additionally, a Delta flight from LaGuardia to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), flight DL2396, was delayed because the airline was unable to find a second pilot. Passenger Rudi Bester noted that the staffing shortage further disrupted operations on this route.
Weather Disruptions Continue to Impact Northeast Airlines
The FAA had already imposed ground stops earlier in the week at seven major Northeast airports before expanding the restrictions to nine airports today. Thunderstorms scattered across New York and New Jersey during the afternoon and evening have strained air traffic operations, particularly affecting carriers with large Northeast
hub operations such as Delta Air Lines and JetBlue. The persistent weather disruptions are expected to prolong cancellations and delays throughout the region on August 6 and into August 7.
