WestJet flight attendants, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), have issued a strike notice effective August 14, 2026 at 2:01 a.m. EST, escalating a labour dispute over pay and working conditions. In response, WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notice early on August 13, 2026, signalling potential mass flight cancellations across Canada over the following three days.

Strike Notice and Lockout Details

The dispute centers on the union’s demand that flight attendants be compensated for all working hours from check-in until clock-out, rather than WestJet’s current pay system based on “credit hours” tied only to flight time. This system does not account for

delays such as extended ground time or de-icing. Negotiations between WestJet and CUPE remain ongoing but unresolved as the strike notice takes effect.

WestJet operates more than 600 daily flights and employs roughly 4,400 flight attendants under CUPE contracts. The pending labour action threatens widespread service disruptions during a peak summer travel period. WestJet’s CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said in a statement that the lockout notice was “not one that was made lightly” and expressed regret over the impact on passengers.

Passenger Impact and Flexible Travel Policies

WestJet announced flexible cancellation and rebooking options for passengers with travel dates between July 30 and August 4, 2026,

to provide flexibility ahead of the strike. The policy allows travelers to cancel or reschedule flights at no cost during that period. Impacted flights exclude WestJet Encore services operating Q400 aircraft and codeshare flights operated by partner airlines, which are not affected by the strike.

Aviation expert John Gradek estimated that up to 75,000 passengers could face disruptions if mass cancellations occur during the 72-hour strike and lockout window. WestJet, which holds about 30% of Canada’s domestic market, will notify customers who booked directly via email about any changes. Passengers booked through travel agents must contact those agents directly.

Statements From WestJet and CUPE

Alexis

von Hoensbroech emphasized the airline’s responsibility to maintain operational integrity: “We greatly value the work and contributions of our Cabin Crew, and it is our responsibility to ensure the integrity of our network and to minimize the risk of stranding our guests, crew and aircraft.” He confirmed that the lockout was a response to union strike action.

Alia Hussain, president of the local CUPE union, reiterated the union’s preference to reach a deal without a strike, stating: “We’ve been clear from the start that we want to reach a fair deal without a strike.” Both sides remain engaged in negotiations

but no agreement had been reached before the strike deadline.

Labour Context and Market Background

This labour dispute follows a similar strike by Air Canada flight attendants in August 2025 that caused cancellations of approximately 700 daily flights and affected about 500,000 passengers. That action highlighted the compensation challenges facing flight attendants across Canada. WestJet’s compensation system, unlike union demands, has not been updated to cover non-flying work hours including delays on the ground.

As one of Canada’s largest domestic carriers, WestJet’s labour disruptions could significantly affect air travel nationwide. The airline’s recent recognition for North America’s best on-time performance is at risk due to

these disruptions.

Airline Passenger Protections and Communications

WestJet has urged passengers to consult its Travel Advisory page for the latest updates. Customers booking directly with WestJet will receive email notifications about flight changes. Those booking through third parties must contact agents directly to manage reservations.

An airline spokesperson said, “Given the high volume of summer travel, we are providing guests with additional flexibility so they can make the travel decisions that best meet their needs.” WestJet confirmed it will refund or re-accommodate passengers impacted by cancellations or delays related to the strike.
