Porter Airlines cancelled a scheduled flight from Victoria Airport to Toronto Airport on August 6, 2026, after a young child passenger refused to fasten their seatbelt, creating an unsafe situation that prevented the flight’s departure.
Attempts to Secure Child Passenger Led to Flight Cancellation
The child was reportedly standing in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt. Efforts made by both the accompanying parent and the flight crew to resolve the issue were unsuccessful. Due to safety protocols prohibiting takeoff with unrestrained passengers, the aircraft returned to the terminal and the child and adult disembarked around 11:30 p.m.
Passengers Delayed and Rebooked Following Cancellation
The delay caused by removing the two passengers and the
resulting time needed to refile paperwork made it impossible for the flight to depart before the airport’s runway closed at midnight. Consequently, the rest of the passengers were required to disembark and were rebooked on a flight departing the following day, resulting in disruption for all onboard.
Safety Concerns Highlighted by Aviation Expert
Child aviation safety expert Lia Tuso explained that unrestrained children can become projectiles during turbulence, particularly during critical phases of flight such as takeoff and landing, posing significant risks to all passengers. She underscored the necessity of strict enforcement of seatbelt rules for children on aircraft.
Passenger Descriptions of Child’s Behavior and Airline Response
Passenger Aryeh Kozuch described the child as
frightened, stating that the child frequently hid under the seat and would slide out from under the restraints if forced to be strapped in. Kozuch said, “If they got forced into [being] strapped in, they just kind of slid out underneath.” The child was visibly scared during the incident.
Porter Airlines Issues Apology and Emphasizes Safety Protocol
Brad Cicero, spokesperson for Porter Airlines, said, “The aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the two passengers disembark.” He also apologised for the inconvenience caused to the remaining passengers who had to wait until the next day
to depart.
Public Debate on Airline Rules and Family Travel Enforcement
The incident has reignited discussions about airlines’ tolerance levels for families traveling with children and the enforcement of in-flight safety rules. Opinions vary on how airlines should balance safety regulations with accommodating families, and whether parents bear responsibility for enforcing seatbelt use during flights.
