A 90-second power outage struck Network Rail’s Manchester Rail Operating Centre at 13:41 BST on Thursday 6 August 2026, triggering widespread signalling failures across North West England.
Signalling Failures Halt Trains Across North West
The local electricity supply cut affected the centre controlling signalling systems over large parts of the North West, forcing trains to stop and causing delays and cancellations. Network Rail confirmed the 90-second power outage disrupted signals and communications, resulting in significant service interruptions around Manchester, including impact on Manchester Piccadilly station.
SP Electricity North West reported the power cut impacted over 400 local postcodes, including areas near the Harpurhey district of East Manchester,
which houses the Network Rail centre.
Overnight Restoration Efforts and Service Recovery
Network Rail engineers worked through the night to repair and reconfigure signalling systems affected by the outage, which included replacing damaged components. By the morning of 7 August, most rail services in the North West were largely restored, although some TransPennine Express routes continued to experience disruptions.
Displaced trains and crews were returned to depots overnight to prepare services for the following day.
Network Rail Apology and Investigation
Chris Wright, Network Rail’s North West route director, stated the outage was effectively longer than 90 seconds due to backup systems not responding as expected: “We didn’t experience a 90-second interruption,”
he said. Wright added some communications systems “did not respond how we would have expected, and then needed reconfiguring and replacing.”
Network Rail apologised to passengers for the disruption and thanked them for their patience while signalling was fully restored late on the evening of 6 August. The organisation launched an investigation into why backup systems failed to operate as intended.
Centralised Signalling Control and Risk of Wider Failure
Manchester is one of 12 Rail Operating Centres that Network Rail has established to centralise signalling control, replacing hundreds of older signal boxes. This consolidation increases vulnerability, as a single centre failure can affect a broad area.

Christian Wolmar commented, “if one thing goes wrong, it can wipe out, as we saw, quite a lot of the network,” highlighting the risk of centralising signalling control in few hubs.
Network Rail announced plans to enhance system resilience to prevent repeat incidents.
Funding Pressures and Future Rail Organisation
Rail engineer Gareth Dennis linked the outage to ongoing funding and staffing challenges faced by Network Rail, questioning whether current resource levels are adequate for system maintenance and checks.
The UK government approved a £44.1 billion funding settlement for Network Rail’s 2024-29 strategic business plan, a £3 billion increase compared to the previous period. However, rising inflation
and extreme weather events continue to strain budgets.
The government plans to replace Network Rail with a new body, Great British Railways, integrating infrastructure management and train operations under a unified organisation.
