Safety Breach: Toddler Refuses Seatbelt
The aircraft doors had closed and the plane was taxiing to the runway at Victoria International Airport when crew members noticed the toddler standing on their seat without a seatbelt. Both the child’s parent and cabin staff attempted repeatedly to secure the child, but were unsuccessful.
Porter Airlines stated, “A young child was standing in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt.” The crew deemed this an unsafe condition
preventing takeoff.

Because of the unresolved safety issue, the captain aborted takeoff and returned the aircraft to the terminal at Victoria International Airport. The toddler, their parent, and other passengers disembarked, and their baggage was removed from the plane.
Additional procedures to refile the flight plan and recalculate the aircraft’s weight and balance delayed any new departure past 12:30 a.m., Victoria International Airport’s runway curfew time. With the runway closed after this time, Porter Airlines had to cancel flight PD444 for the night and reschedule it for the following morning.

The replacement flight departed Victoria at 10:49 a.m. local time
on August 9, 2026. According to flight tracking data from FlightAware, PD444 arrived in Toronto Pearson International Airport at 6:16 a.m. Eastern Time the same day.

Porter Airlines spokesperson Brad Cicero apologized for the disruption caused by the cancellation and confirmed safety concerns over the unsecured child as the reason the flight could not proceed. He said, “We apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day.”
All passengers onboard were stranded overnight in Victoria, forced to spend the night due to the late hour and runway curfew. The
toddler and parent’s luggage were removed from the aircraft during deplaning.
