The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed and continues to enforce a ground stop at Newark Airport on August 8, 2026, due to severe thunderstorms. The ground stop is set to remain in effect until 10:15 p.m. as storm conditions persist across the region.
Flight Cancellations and Delays at Tri-State Airports
Data from FlightAware shows 930 flights have been canceled across Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports as of 9:45 p.m. Additionally, more than 1,000 flights have experienced delays at these tri-state area airports on the same date.
Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports Lift Ground Stops but Face Delays
While the FAA has lifted ground stops at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, residual delays remain in effect as flight operations adjust
to the severe weather impact. Newark Airport continues to operate under the ground stop restriction.
The severe thunderstorms affecting the tri-state region have also prompted NJ Transit to suspend rail services, adding to travel disruptions in New Jersey.
