Uganda Airlines began scheduled direct flights to Accra, Ghana, and Kigali, Rwanda on August 5, 2026, marking a significant expansion of its African route network. The airline aims to strengthen Entebbe International Airport’s role as a regional hub while enhancing connectivity between East and West Africa.
Extended Network and Route Connectivity
The new services to Accra and Kigali bolster Uganda Airlines’ presence in West and East Africa. The Accra route complements the carrier’s existing Lagos service in West Africa, supporting growth in business, tourism, and diplomatic relations between Uganda and Ghana. The Kigali route links two of East Africa’s fastest-growing economies and improves access to
the airline’s broader network through Entebbe International Airport.
Passengers using these routes will benefit from direct connections facilitating travel across Africa and onward links to Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Aircraft Order and Fleet Expansion
Uganda Airlines recently placed its first direct order with Boeing, acquiring eight passenger aircraft to expand regional and long-haul operations. The order includes four Boeing 737-8 MAX jets and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This announcement was made during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, following the signing of a framework agreement at State House in Entebbe.
The agreement also covers a future acquisition of two converted Boeing
freighter planes as Uganda Airlines prepares to launch dedicated cargo services.

Ato Girma Wake, Uganda Airlines Board Chairman, described the launches of the Accra and Kigali routes as a key milestone in the airline’s growth strategy. “As Africa’s connectivity continues to grow, these routes will strengthen commercial and tourism links while offering our guests greater convenience and more travel choices,” he said.
The new flights are expected to facilitate the transport of time-sensitive cargo, including fresh produce and manufactured goods, between East and West Africa, enhancing trade opportunities alongside passenger travel.
Launch Ceremony and Political Endorsement
The fleet expansion deal was formalized in the presence
of President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda at State House, Entebbe. The signing signaled government support for the airline’s strategic plan to enlarge its footprint across African markets and reinforce Entebbe International Airport as a regional hub linking Africa’s diverse economic centers.
