The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is maintaining a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport through 10:15 p.m. on August 8, 2026, due to severe thunderstorms impacting the region. The ongoing storm conditions have disrupted flight operations at one of the busiest airports serving the tri-state area.
Flight Disruptions Across Tri-State Airports
FlightAware data reports that as of 9:45 p.m. on August 8, 930 flights were canceled across Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports combined. Additionally, over 1,000 flights remain delayed in the tri-state area. While the FAA has lifted ground stops at New York’s Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, both facilities continue to experience residual delays
resulting from the prior disruptions.
Storm Impact Extends to Rail Service
The severe thunderstorms affecting the tri-state region have also forced NJ Transit to suspend rail services. This suspension compounds travel difficulties for commuters and travelers relying on the rail network alongside airport operations.
