Bristol Airport halted all flight operations from 18:00 BST on Friday, August 7, 2026, until 08:00 BST on Saturday, August 8, due to a runway defect discovered during a routine inspection. The defect, which did not involve any aircraft, required an overnight repair that allowed flights to resume slowly from 08:00.
Dozens of flights were either cancelled or delayed, impacting thousands of passengers. Travel-monitoring service Inrix reported delays of up to two hours on August 8, although one early outbound flight experienced a six-hour delay. EasyJet flights were among those cancelled, with passengers citing poor communication and minimal assistance amid
the disruptions. Bristol Airport issued a formal apology for the cancellations and inconvenience caused, emphasizing passenger and staff safety as the reason behind the suspension.
Passenger Experiences and Flight Disruptions
Several travelers reported extended waits inside Bristol Airport without clear guidance. A passenger on social media described “appalling” communication by EasyJet, saying the airline was “holding everyone hostage.” Another passenger stated on social media, “We are stuck in the airport with no clear guidance for 3 hours.” An EasyJet customer whose flight from Dubrovnik to Bristol was cancelled criticized the lack of onsite staff and the absence of hotel accommodations. One passenger, Dave Blackwell, recounted
how his flight back to Bristol was diverted to Newcastle, necessitating a five to six-hour bus journey onward. Paul Smith expressed frustration over poor communication after cancelling his trip to Glasgow for his son’s birthday. An 18-year-old passenger, Finn Holland, said operations were “not very organised” after being stranded in Bournemouth following a diversion.
Runway Defect and Airport Response
A Bristol Airport spokesperson confirmed the runway defect was identified during regular inspections and did not involve any aircraft. The defect prompted a precautionary suspension of flights lasting 14 hours while repairs were conducted nightly. The spokesperson said, “We’re very sorry to customers affected and any
impact this has had to their summer holiday. We continue to work closely with all airlines affected. The safety of passengers and staff is of paramount importance, which is why we made the decision to temporarily suspend flights as a precaution and to allow for the runway repair to be carried out.”
Ongoing Delays and Advisories
After reopening at 08:00 BST on August 8, Bristol Airport continued to experience delays of up to two hours. Passengers were advised to verify the status of their flights with their respective airlines before traveling. The disruption coincided with the Bristol Balloon Fiesta event, increasing the number of
affected travelers during the busy summer period.
