Uganda Airlines has launched scheduled direct flights to Accra, Ghana, and Kigali, Rwanda, with the goal of boosting business, tourism, and trade between East and West Africa. The announcement was made ahead of the airline’s planned expansion to strengthen Entebbe International Airport’s role as a regional transit hub.
Entebbe International Airport as Regional Hub
The new Accra and Kigali routes increase Uganda Airlines’ connectivity from Entebbe International Airport, which offers onward flights to destinations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The Accra link expands Uganda Airlines’ presence in West Africa alongside its existing service to Lagos, Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Kigali route enhances intra-East African
connections between two of the region’s fastest-growing economies.
Fleet Expansion with Boeing Aircraft
The route launches coincide with Uganda Airlines’ recent order of eight Boeing passenger aircraft, marking the carrier’s first direct purchase from the US manufacturer. The deal includes four Boeing 737-8 MAX and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The framework agreement was signed at State House, Entebbe, in the presence of President Yoweri Museveni and was publicly announced during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. Plans also exist to acquire two converted Boeing freighter aircraft to expand dedicated cargo services.
Benefits to Travelers and Cargo Network
The direct flights to Accra and Kigali provide passengers with more travel
options and convenience between East and West Africa via Uganda’s Entebbe Airport. Travelers between Uganda and Rwanda gain a direct connection through the Kigali route, improving access to Uganda Airlines’ wider network. The airline also expects these routes to strengthen cargo operations by facilitating the movement of fresh produce, manufactured goods, and other time-sensitive products across the continent.

Ato Girma Wake, Uganda Airlines Board Chairman, described the launch as a key milestone in the airline’s expansion strategy. He said, “As Africa’s connectivity continues to grow, these routes will strengthen commercial and tourism links while offering our guests greater convenience and
more travel choices.”

Alongside passenger services, Uganda Airlines aims to enhance its cargo network through the new Accra and Kigali routes. This development supports the efficient transport of time-sensitive goods between East and West Africa, underpinning trade in fresh produce and manufactured items.
