Caribbean Airlines cancelled Flight BW485 from Orlando Airport to Port of Spain on August 2, 2026, after detecting a technical issue with the aircraft prior to departure. The airline stated safety of customers and crew as its highest priority, which led to the flight being grounded before takeoff.
Recovery and Compensation Measures
Following the cancellation, Caribbean Airlines initiated immediate recovery efforts. Some passengers were accommodated on a scheduled service the following day, August 3, while a dedicated aircraft was dispatched on August 4 to transport the remainder of travellers to Trinidad. The airline confirmed that affected passengers would receive compensation according to its established
policies.
Passengers stranded in Orlando were provided with US$20 meal vouchers at the airport. Some were lodged in a hotel overnight where breakfast was supplied the next morning, though no dinner was offered. Despite these measures, there were reports of multiple delays and communication gaps throughout the disruption.
Passenger Experience During the Disruption
Several passengers, including vulnerable individuals such as babies, senior citizens, and those on medication, experienced extended delays. Some spent nearly four hours onboard the aircraft before learning the flight had been cancelled. Repeated postponements of rescheduled departure times added to the frustrations, alongside limited communication from airline staff.
Official Airline Statements
Caribbean Airlines issued a
statement emphasizing that safety concerns necessitated cancelling Flight BW485. “The safety of our customers and crew remains our highest priority. As such, the decision was made to cancel the flight. While we understand the disruption this caused, Caribbean Airlines does not compromise on safety under any circumstances,” the airline said.
The airline apologized for the inconvenience faced by passengers and thanked them for their patience and cooperation as teams worked to restore travel plans as quickly and safely as possible. Caribbean Airlines reiterated that compensation would be provided in line with its policies.
