The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) was held from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Kenya, drawing more than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries. This figure marks roughly a 30% increase over the 7,691 attendees recorded at MKTE 2025. The event featured over 400 exhibitors and more than 250 quality-vetted international buyers, solidifying MKTE as East Africa’s leading travel trade platform and a central component of Kenya’s tourism growth strategy.
Expo Focuses on Digital Innovation and Tourism Transformation
MKTE 2026 operated under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with global tourism industry trends highlighted on World
Tourism Day 2026. The expo provided a forum to explore how AI, big data, immersive technologies, digital payments, and smart destination management tools can advance tourism development throughout East Africa.
MICE Sector Development Central to MKTE 2026
The event placed particular emphasis on Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector. The Kenya MICE Club, a partnership platform uniting private sector and government entities, played a key role in programming and showcasing the country’s capacity to host global business events. Duncan Muriuki, chair of the Kenya MICE Association, stated that MICE is critical for increasing tourism revenue by attracting high-value business events. He noted the association’s collaboration
with government and the private sector to devise competitive bidding packages, leveraging Kenya’s world-class facilities in Nairobi and Mombasa and strong “bleisure” offerings to boost international event wins.
Government Support Through Visa Reforms and Air Connectivity
Government initiatives to enhance visa access and expand air connectivity are foundational to Kenya’s growing tourism appeal. Raymond Cheruiyot, chairman of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK), described these reforms as strengthening the country’s competitiveness as a global destination. He added that MKTE serves as a vital platform for presenting Kenya’s diverse tourism offerings and solidifying strategic partnerships that aim to boost visitor arrivals and tourism revenue growth sustainably.
Data-Driven Strategies Amplify MKTE’s Impact
KTB CEO
June Chepkemei emphasized that every aspect of MKTE 2026, from buyer selection to seminar content, was guided by data and consumer demand intelligence. She explained that marketing campaigns, both domestic and international, are evidence-based and designed to convert visitor interest into arrivals. Chepkemei presented a certificate of recognition to Lydia Kimani of Sawela Lodges during the expo’s partners’ breakfast, highlighting collaboration between public and private sectors as a core driver of Kenya’s tourism success.
The expo’s agenda included seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips to enhance trade connections and achieve measurable outcomes. The event also underscored the role of technology
and smart destination management in maintaining Kenya’s competitive edge while ensuring inclusive growth across the tourism industry.
