The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) will take place in Nairobi at Uhuru Gardens from October 6 to 8, 2026. The three-day event expects to host over 10,000 tourism delegates, more than 400 exhibitors, and 250 international buyers, representing over 40 countries.
MKTE 2026 aims to accelerate Kenya’s tourism growth towards a target of five million international visitors annually by 2027. The expo provides a platform for local suppliers, regional travel companies, and international travel agents to engage directly, fostering partnerships that support this ambitious goal.
Expo Theme Focuses on Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence
The event’s theme is “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of
Tourism.” It highlights the integration of AI, big data, immersive technology, digital payment systems, and smart destination management in transforming Kenya’s tourism sector.
These innovations enable operators to analyze visitor data, personalize itineraries, dynamically adjust pricing, and simplify transactions for international tourists, positioning Kenya as a smart tourism destination.
MICE Sector Central to Kenya’s Tourism Revenue Growth
The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector is a strategic pillar of Kenya’s tourism expansion. The Kenya MICE Association and Kenya MICE Club actively promote this segment, emphasizing high-value business travelers who typically stay longer and spend more.
Improvements to conference facilities in Nairobi and Mombasa aim to attract more
global events. Combining business trips with leisure activities such as wildlife safaris and coastal visits is designed to maximize economic impact from these visitors.
Officials Cite Data-Driven Planning and Infrastructure Reforms
Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Chief Executive Officer June Chepkemei noted the expo’s program leverages consumer demand intelligence to convert interest into arrivals, stating, “Every element of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence. We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals.”
Duncan Muriuki, Chairman of the Kenya MICE Association, described MICE as “the
next frontier for growing tourism revenue,” highlighting competitive bidding strategies and destination incentives developed in collaboration with the private sector and government.
Raymond Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK), acknowledged government reforms improving visa access and expanding air connectivity as foundational for tourism growth.
Attendance Growth and Traveler Planning Considerations
Expected participation for MKTE 2026 reflects a 30% increase from the 7,691 delegates at the 2025 expo, surpassing 10,000 attendees. This growth follows government efforts to enhance visa facilitation and air travel routes to Nairobi and Mombasa.
High demand will require visitors and business guests to book flights and accommodation well in
advance. The expo’s advancement of smart and sustainable tourism solutions will improve trip booking, digital payments, and itinerary management for travelers.
Visitors are encouraged to engage registered local guides to ensure their spending supports conservation and community projects in Kenya.
MKTE as East Africa’s Premier Travel Trade Platform
MKTE remains East Africa’s leading travel trade event, aligning with global tourism priorities such as those highlighted by World Tourism Day 2026. The expo is a strategic platform for Africa’s tourism sector to embrace technology, innovation, and sustainability.
It facilitates business-to-business meetings, trade seminars, and familiarisation trips to key parks and resorts, supporting Kenya’s competitiveness in the international travel market
and reinforcing its role as a gateway to the East African region.
