WestJet canceled over 300 flights on Monday, August 3, 2026, accounting for approximately 62 percent of its scheduled flights nationwide as it responded to a flight attendant strike that began early Sunday morning. By 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, August 4, the airline had canceled an additional 16 flights. The strike commenced after contract negotiations between WestJet and CUPE Local 8125, representing 4,400 flight attendants, failed to reach an agreement before the strike deadline.
Flight Attendant Contract Agreement and Negotiations
WestJet and CUPE Local 8125 reached a tentative agreement early Monday morning to end the strike. The union local president, Alia Hussain, announced that flight
attendants have 30 days from August 3, 2026, to ratify the new contract, which includes pay increases. The labor dispute centered on wage demands and issues regarding unpaid ground work by cabin crew. Contract talks had been ongoing since January 2026 in Calgary.
Operational Recovery and Customer Provisions
Following the strike’s end, WestJet has begun resuming operations, repositioning aircraft and crews with plans for a gradual return to normal flight schedules. The airline has allowed travelers with flights booked between July 30 and Tuesday, August 4, to make one-time changes or cancellations without fees. WestJet also committed to refunding or re-accommodating passengers affected by delays
or cancellations. Under Canadian passenger protection regulations, the airline is required to arrange alternate transportation on competitor airlines when necessary.
Official Statements and Traveler Guidance
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech apologized for the disruption, saying, “We know this disruption has been frustrating for our guests and WestJetters and we’re sorry for that.” He added that teams are working to restore service and thanked customers for their patience. WestJet spokesperson Ashley Tymko confirmed the airline is entering the recovery phase but warned that impacts continue, advising passengers to verify flight status before going to the airport. Union local president Alia Hussain confirmed the 30-day ratification period
and noted the inclusion of pay increases in the tentative deal.
Passengers are advised to only travel to airports if their WestJet flights are confirmed. Delays and cancellations remain likely as the airline works to restore its network nationwide.
