The Government of Sri Lanka has outlined a National Tourism Vision for 2030 that seeks to attract 5 million tourist arrivals, develop a tourism workforce of 800,000 people, and generate USD 10 billion in tourism revenue by the year 2030.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced these targets during the 45th Graduation Ceremony of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) held on July 31, 2026, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.
Tourism Sector Recovery and Economic Contribution
Addressing attendees, Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized the resilience of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah. She noted
that by 2026 the sector had recovered substantially, evolving from a crisis-affected industry into a major driver of the country’s economic revival.
In 2025, Sri Lanka’s tourism revenue reached approximately USD 3.2 billion. From January to July 2026, tourist arrivals exceeded 1.3 million visitors. The tourism industry also supports more than 429,000 direct and indirect jobs, underlining its role in sustaining livelihoods across the country.
SLITHM Graduation Ceremony and Institutional Role
SLITHM, established in 1964 originally as the Ceylon Hotel School, has contributed to professional tourism education for over 60 years. At its 45th Graduation Ceremony, the institution recognized new graduates who completed their studies in
tourism and hotel management.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya presented awards and certificates to graduating students, acknowledging SLITHM’s sustained role in preparing qualified professionals whose expertise supports Sri Lanka’s growing tourism sector.
Workforce Development and Inclusivity Efforts
The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering environmentally responsible, ethical, and adaptable tourism professionals capable of providing high-quality services. She described these attributes as essential to meeting the sector’s 2030 goals.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya praised SLITHM’s initiatives to promote inclusivity by supporting persons with disabilities in accessing employment opportunities within tourism. She also emphasized the need to create safe and supportive working environments that encourage increased participation of
women, thereby contributing to a balanced and productive workforce.

The graduation event was attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism Dheera Hettiarachchi, SLITHM Chairman Wasantha Manthripala, the SLITHM CEO/Director General, diplomatic representatives, academic and non-academic staff, graduates, and their families.
