More than 700 biometric touchpoints have been connected in Qatar Airways and SITA’s Fast Pass system at Hamad International Airport, launched in 2026. This end-to-end facial recognition technology covers check-in, bag drop, security and boarding functions, enabling passengers to use their face as a boarding pass after a single enrollment via the Qatar Airways app or self-service kiosks.
Biometric Systems Reduce Processing Times and Expand in the Middle East
Biometric-enabled boarding systems are used by over 43% of airports globally. In the Middle East, Dubai International Airport (DXB) uses Paravision and emaratech’s facial recognition technology in its Red Carpet Smart Corridor, which processes more than 10 travelers simultaneously. Emirates Airline equipped
DXB with over 200 biometric boarding cameras since 2017. Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport has deployed facial biometrics at five of nine passenger touchpoints. Etihad Airways tests facial recognition for boarding and lounge access, showing strong regional adoption to reduce passenger processing times.
According to the International Air Transport Association, biometric confirmation can reduce passenger processing time by up to 40%, a critical improvement as DXB handled over 95.2 million international passengers in 2025. Majed Al Joker, COO of Dubai Airports, said the goal is to deliver “consistent, measurable improvements in how guests move through our terminals.” The middle-east region
expects to handle 240 million passengers in 2026, further accelerating biometric technology adoption.
Emerging Biometric Deployments in the Region and Beyond
Al Maktoum International Airport, under construction near Dubai, plans a highly interconnected biometric system powered by artificial intelligence to personalize passenger services and optimize flow. In Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport will trial biometric passenger registration, allowing self-service check-in and use of electronic passports. Vietnam’s Noi Bai International Airport has introduced biometric check-in kiosks processing 2,000 to 3,000 passengers daily, integrating passenger data to expedite security and boarding.
Nigeria’s Federal Airports Authority is implementing V-Pass, a facial recognition-based identity verification system developed with Verxid Technologies and supported
by Barnksforte Technologies. V-Pass includes a Central Management System for tracking, analytics, and future airport system integrations, part of Nigeria’s broader biometric and digital transformation agenda.
Market Forecast and Implementation Challenges
The airport biometrics technology market is projected to reach $150.58 billion by 2030, with biometric services expected to hit $276.56 billion by 2032. By 2027, three-quarters of airports worldwide are predicted to implement biometric technologies for passenger journeys including check-in, bag drop, boarding, and border control. Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) adoption will exceed 1.2 billion passengers globally by 2035.
Despite advances, challenges remain concerning governance, liability, funding, and ownership. An Asian Aviation analysis notes
that biometric passenger processing is no longer experimental but few operators have achieved scalable, interoperable models. Strategic alignment and governance will be critical in the next evolution of biometric deployments.
