Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) issued a statement on July 20, 2026, to clarify that Belize has not received visa-free travel privileges to Spain or the Schengen Area despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. The announcement followed Spain’s publication on July 14, 2026, of a list confirming visa exemptions for citizens of 60 countries, including nine Caribbean Community (CARICOM) members.
Spain’s July 14 List Restates EU Visa Exemptions
The Belize MFAFT noted the list published by Spain was a reiteration of existing European Union visa rules under EU Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, which governs visa-free travel at Schengen borders. Visa exemption status to enter Schengen member
states is determined collectively by all EU Member States rather than unilaterally by Spain. The ministry emphasized, “These determinations are made collectively by EU Member States.” Thus, Spain’s publication does not represent a new visa waiver decision.
Visa Requirements Remain for Belizean Nationals
Belize remains categorized as a country whose nationals are required to obtain visas before entering Spain or other Schengen countries. Removing the visa requirement would involve a formal legislative process at the EU level, beyond the authority of individual member states such as Spain. The Belize government reiterated that no such EU legislative amendment has occurred.
Ongoing Diplomatic Engagements and Visa Improvements
Belize has pursued full visa-waiver status through
ongoing diplomatic efforts with Spain and the European Union for several years. As a result, since November 2025, biometric passport holders from Belize have been eligible for multiple-entry Schengen visas valid for up to five years. The government described this agreement as a notable facilitation that has enhanced travel opportunities for Belizeans visiting Spain and Schengen countries for business, tourism, education, and family reasons.
Despite these visa facilitation measures, negotiations toward a comprehensive Schengen visa waiver for Belizean nationals remain in progress. The Belize MFAFT continues to prioritize full visa-free access within its diplomatic agenda, reflecting its longstanding relationship with
the European Union.
Travelers Should Note Visa Requirements
The ministry warned travelers not to assume visa-free entry to Spain or the Schengen Area based on Spain’s July 14, 2026, list. Belizean citizens still need visas to travel to these destinations, except for those holding biometric passports who can access the extended multiple-entry visa option agreed upon in November 2025. This distinction aims to prevent confusion among Belizean and Caribbean travelers following recent inaccurate media reports.
The clarification from Belize’s MFAFT underscores the collective nature of EU visa policy decisions and confirms that unilateral lists by individual member states do not alter visa requirements for third
countries, including Belize.
