The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced the rollout of the V-Pass biometric identity verification system to improve speed and security in domestic air travel within Nigeria. The system, unveiled in July 2026, aims to streamline passenger verification and boarding at Nigerian airports under FAAN’s authority.
Biometric Technology and Registration Process
V-Pass uses facial recognition technology to authenticate passenger identities. Nigerian travelers register with their National Identification Number (NIN) and capture their facial biometrics. Foreign passengers will enrol through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of international passports combined with biometric authentication, according to a FAAN statement.
Dual-Verification Security Protocol
Passengers undergo identity checks twice: first before entering restricted
airport areas and again prior to boarding flights. Verification after enrolment takes less than 30 seconds, while initial registration requires about one minute. The two-step process aims to prevent impersonation and unauthorized access.
System Features: Kiosks, E-Gates, and Airline Data
During rollout, passengers can use self-service kiosks or get assistance from FAAN personnel. Electronic gates (E-Gates) will automate entry to controlled zones, reducing queues and improving passenger flow. The system provides airlines secured digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding statistics via a dedicated digital interface.
Data Privacy and FAAN-Verxid Partnership
The V-Pass platform complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR). Biometric data is not stored on kiosks or
handheld devices, ensuring passenger data security. FAAN developed the system in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited. The platform’s Central Management System tracks passenger movements, generates analytics, and supports future integration with other airport technologies.
Digital Transformation and Sensitisation Campaign
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Adebola, described V-Pass as part of the authority’s digital transformation agenda to build smarter, safer, and more efficient airports. Nationwide sensitisation campaigns through media and airport announcements, along with a live proof-of-concept demonstration, will precede the full rollout.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, disclosed the initiative during a strategic meeting between FAAN and
Verxid Technologies Limited focused on deployment and security protocols. The system embodies FAAN’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve passenger facilitation and aviation security.
“Nigerian passengers will register with their NIN and facial biometric capture, while foreign passengers will enrol using international passports through OCR and biometric authentication. The system will check passengers before they enter restricted areas and again before boarding,” FAAN stated.
