The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rolled out the V-Pass biometric identity verification system in July 2026 to enhance security and accelerate passenger processing at domestic airports nationwide.
V-Pass uses facial recognition technology to verify passengers’ identities, enabling Nigerian travellers to register with their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside a facial biometric capture. Foreign passengers enrol using international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) combined with biometric authentication. Passenger identity checks are conducted twice: before entry into restricted airport areas and again prior to boarding, employing a dual-verification process intended to block impersonation, unauthorized access, and identity fraud.
During
the initial rollout, passengers can register and verify their identities using self-service kiosks or receive help from FAAN staff. Verification after enrolment takes under 30 seconds, and first-time registration completes in approximately one minute. Automated electronic gates (E-Gates) will manage access to secure zones, reducing queues and improving passenger flow within domestic airports.
The system offers airlines secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding data through an integrated platform. A Central Management System monitors passenger movement, generates analytics, and supports future integrations with additional airport technologies. V-Pass conforms to Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), ensuring passenger data
privacy by preventing storage on kiosks or handheld devices.
Prior to full deployment, FAAN and its technology partner Verxid Technologies Limited will conduct a nationwide sensitisation campaign utilizing television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories to inform passengers about the V-Pass system. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessment will precede the comprehensive rollout.
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Adebola, stated the initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to using technology for improving passenger facilitation and strengthening aviation security at domestic airports in Nigeria.
V-Pass is part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation strategy
aimed at creating smarter, safer, and more efficient domestic airport operations through advanced biometric and access control technologies.
