The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) launched the V-Pass biometric identity verification system in July 2026 to accelerate and secure domestic air travel across Nigerian airports. The system uses facial recognition technology to reduce reliance on physical ID documents and streamline passenger processing.
V-Pass Development, Enrolment and Verification Process
FAAN developed the V-Pass system in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited. Nigerian passengers register through a one-time enrolment capturing their National Identity Number (NIN) and facial biometrics. Foreign passengers enrol using international passports via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) combined with biometric authentication. Verification is performed twice: before passengers enter restricted airport areas and again before boarding
flights, helping prevent impersonation and unauthorized access.
Verification Timing and Access Automation
Biometric verification after enrolment takes less than 30 seconds; first-time registration takes about one minute. Electronic gates (E-Gates) automate access to controlled airport zones, reducing queues and improving passenger flow within Nigerian domestic airports.
Airline Integration and Management Systems
The V-Pass platform provides airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding statistics. A Central Management System tracks passenger movement, generates analytics, and supports integration with other airport technologies to boost operational efficiency.
Data Privacy and Public Sensitisation
The system complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR). Passenger biometric data is not stored on kiosks or handheld devices, safeguarding
privacy. FAAN and Verxid Technologies plan a nationwide sensitisation campaign using television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories to educate passengers on V-Pass usage. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessments will be conducted ahead of full deployment.

Ms Adebola, FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, highlighted V-Pass as part of FAAN’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve passenger facilitation and strengthen aviation security.
The dual-verification process enhances security by preventing identity fraud,
impersonation, and unauthorized access. Passenger enrolment and verification can be conducted via self-service kiosks or with assistance from FAAN personnel, ensuring accessibility during the system transition.
