JetBlue has grounded all flights scheduled to arrive at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) for the remainder of Tuesday, July 22, 2026, following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ground stops issued at multiple Northeast airports including Baltimore, Boston, Newark, Washington Dulles, Washington National, and New York LaGuardia. Arrivals at JFK are suspended indefinitely due to widespread thunderstorms across the Northeast, while departures at JFK face average delays of approximately 90 minutes.
On July 21, JetBlue canceled 257 flights, accounting for one-quarter of its planned schedule that day, and experienced severe delays on 373 flights. The airline had already
faced significant operational disruptions over the prior days with cancellations numbering 307 on July 18, 293 on July 19, and 147 on July 20, 2026. Thunderstorms sweeping the Northeast have led the FAA to mandate ground stops that further exacerbate scheduling challenges and delay recovery efforts.
The FAA ground stops have caused average arrival delays for JetBlue flights at JFK of nearly four hours on July 22. An internal JetBlue memo leaked by aviation insider JonNYC on X indicated that the majority of remaining JFK arrivals not yet inbound were canceled for the evening, with only a small number of
departures continuing as scheduled. The airline’s crew scheduling department has faced heavy criticism due to being effectively unreachable, with JetBlue pilots experiencing lengthy hold times and many crews stranded overnight without accommodations. Capt. Wayne Scales, chairman of the JetBlue Master Executive Council, stated, “JetBlue’s Crew Scheduling department was effectively unreachable, with pilots experiencing hours-long hold times. Many pilots and crews were left stranded at the airport as the Company failed to even provide overnight accommodations.” The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) condemned the extensive delays and cited worsening conditions for customers across JetBlue’s network.
Other Northeast airports affected by FAA
ground stops include LaGuardia and Boston, which are also under suspension as of July 22. American Airlines canceled 314 flights nationwide on the same day, representing 8% of its schedule amid the severe weather disruptions. These widespread cancellations and delays highlight ongoing operational difficulties in the Northeast aviation sector. Recovery from such large-scale weather disruptions is complicated by crews and aircraft being out of position, with difficulties in crew scheduling and tracking historically leading to operational meltdowns in comparable past events.
