The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced in July 2026 the rollout of V-Pass, a biometric identity verification system designed to enhance domestic air travel. Developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, the system uses facial recognition technology to expedite passenger verification and reduce dependency on physical identification documents at airports across Nigeria.
Passenger Enrolment and Verification Process
Under the V-Pass system, Nigerian passengers register through a one-time enrolment process using their National Identification Number (NIN) combined with facial biometric capture. Foreign travelers enrol by submitting their international passports, verified by optical character recognition (OCR) and biometric authentication. Passengers undergo two identity checks: one
before entering restricted airport areas and another prior to boarding flights.
A FAAN statement explained, “Nigerian passengers will register with their NIN and facial biometric capture, while foreign passengers will enrol using international passports through OCR and biometric authentication. The system will check passengers before they enter restricted areas and again before boarding.”
Operational Benefits and Security Enhancements
The V-Pass implementation aims to shorten passenger verification time to less than 30 seconds following enrolment, while first-time registration is estimated at about one minute. Electronic gates (E-Gates) will automate access to sensitive airport zones, helping to reduce queues and improve passenger flow. The dual verification process
is intended to prevent impersonation, unauthorized requests, and identity fraud, thereby strengthening aviation security across Nigerian domestic airports.
System Features and Data Privacy
The platform provides airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding statistics. It includes a Central Management System that tracks passenger movement, generates analytics, and supports integration with other airport technologies. The V-Pass system complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), ensuring passenger data confidentiality by not storing information on kiosks or handheld devices.
Deployment Strategy and Official Statements
Before full deployment, FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited will conduct a live Proof of Concept demonstration alongside technical site assessments. A nationwide sensitisation
campaign is planned utilizing television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories to inform the public about V-Pass usage.

The initiative forms part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation agenda to create more efficient, secure, and technologically advanced domestic airport experiences.
