The disruptions followed severe thunderstorms that hit Philadelphia and other parts of the country on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops and ground delays at Philadelphia International Airport and other airports nationwide due to these weather
conditions.
Philadelphia International Airport spokesperson Heather Redfern stated the airport is not given official reasons for delays and cancellations but believes many resulted from the prior day’s weather issues in Philadelphia and across the United States.
Passenger Delays and Rebooking Challenges
Passengers faced extended delays, with some held on airplanes up to four hours before cancellations forced them to disembark. They faced significant difficulties rebooking flights amid limited available options.
Some travelers were forced to find accommodations and spend the night at or near Philadelphia International Airport due to the cancellations caused by the weather.

Passenger Karl Skotleski said, “From what they told us, it was weather-related. I haven’t really seen any evidence to it being that way.” He added, “My wife got the text and then we moved on getting another flight. That flight booked up within minutes, so luckily we got on, but we know that some other people that we were going with did not get on. And there was only like one or two flights available at that moment.”
Passenger Ariella Mafuta described,
“Basically like sitting there for four hours in the airplane, and due to weather problems, they basically canceled all flight departures. So they made you exit the plane, try again today?” to which she replied, “Yes.”
