Carnival Cruise Line has officially started construction on Carnival Destiny, its largest ship to date and the first in the new ACE Class, with a gross tonnage of 230,000 and capacity for more than 8,000 passengers. This marks Carnival’s first ship to exceed 200,000 gross tons. The steel-cutting ceremony was held recently in Monfalcone, Italy, marking the beginning of the project set to complete in 2029.

Design Features and Onboard Innovations

Carnival Destiny is designed to be the most outward-facing megaship, featuring numerous ocean-view balcony cabins, a reimagined lanai deck, and 4.5 acres of glass including multi-story glass walls. Over 70% of its dining venues,

bars, lounges, entertainment facilities, and attractions will introduce new concepts, significantly expanding Carnival’s onboard offerings.

Historical and Builder Background

The new vessel revives the Carnival Destiny name, honoring the original ship built by Fincantieri in 1996, which was the first cruise ship to surpass 100,000 gross tons. That original ship, later renamed Carnival Sunshine after a 2013 refurbishment, remains in service. Fincantieri, responsible for this new build, has delivered 76 ships for Carnival Corporation over the last 30 years.

Official Statements and Fleet Expansion

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said Carnival Destiny builds on a legacy that transformed cruising and will elevate the guest experience by creating

a more expansive and engaging ship. She emphasized the goal of helping guests feel more connected and have more fun aboard: “Carnival Destiny builds on a legacy that changed cruising once before, reimagining what guests can experience at sea,” and, “With this ship, we’re elevating the guest experience again, creating a ship that feels more expansive, while helping guests feel more connected and ultimately have more fun.” Carnival plans to operate three ACE-class ships in total, with the Destiny launching in 2029. By 2027, Carnival aims to reach a fleet size of 30 ships, including the soon-to-arrive Excel-class Carnival Festivale,

which is currently the largest ship in its fleet until the ACE Class debut.
