Richard Adams, senior manager of forecast operations at The Weather Company, stated, “Thick smoke reduces visibility at airports, forcing air traffic control to space planes further apart and slow the rate of takeoffs and landings.” Airports with east-west runway configurations face challenges when pilots approach low sun through smoke layers, reducing visibility to near zero momentarily.

Event Cancellations in Toronto and Surrounding Areas
Toronto recorded the worst air quality of any major city worldwide as
of 8 a.m. ET on July 15, 2026, according to IQAir data. Environment Canada issued an orange (severe) air quality alert due to smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario combined with a heat dome producing temperatures of 33 to 36 degrees Celsius with humidex values up to 42 degrees Celsius.
The City of Toronto cancelled outdoor FIFA World Cup semi-final events, including the FIFA Fan Festival at Fort York and The Bentway, and the 3 p.m. ET semi-final broadcast at Nathan Phillips Square. Premium ticket holders for the Fan Festival were to be contacted about refunds. The City of Vaughan
also cancelled its Canada Celebrates FIFA World Cup semi-final event at Assembly Park.
University of Toronto cancelled its watch party, Niagara Falls paused its nightly fireworks program, and outdoor wading pools and morning swimming lessons in Toronto were closed or moved indoors. CampTO outdoor field trips and programs were relocated indoors to reduce exposure to hazardous air.
The City of Toronto stated these cancellations protect attendees, event personnel, emergency workers, and public safety during sustained high smoke exposure.
Air Quality Alerts Across U.S. States
Michigan issued a statewide air quality alert for July 15, expecting “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” conditions and possible “Unhealthy for All” levels
in northern Lower and Upper Peninsula regions. Minnesota and Wisconsin were also under air quality alerts on the same day.
New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation issued a statewide Air Quality Health Advisory, especially affecting western New York. New York City Office of Emergency Management monitored the smoke plume with particulate matter levels expected below advisory triggers, though conditions remain variable.
Smoke crossed through cities such as Green Bay, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Buffalo, before reaching the I-95 corridor from New York City to Boston by evening.
Canadian Wildfire Situation and Health Risks

reported 836 active wildfires nationwide, with 194 out of control. More than 3,100 wildfires burned over 1.46 million hectares by mid-July, exceeding 134% of the 10-year seasonal average burned area. Environment Canada advises limiting outdoor activities and using properly fitted N95 or KN95 respirators outdoors, as cloth and surgical masks do not filter wildfire smoke fine particles effectively. Dr. Eric Kennedy, wildfire management expert at York University, recommended mask-wearing outdoors even at low smoke levels.
