The incident prompted an extensive search-and-rescue effort lasting more than eight hours. The operation involved the Regal Princess itself, another cruise ship in the vicinity, and Mexican maritime authorities who collaborated in the search.

After a protracted search, Princess Cruises confirmed the crew member had died. The ship was en route
to the port of Cozumel when the incident occurred and canceled its scheduled stop there as a direct result of the overboard event.

Passenger David Jimenez reported that the ship repeatedly slowed and circled the search area, stating, “At times the ship slowed down and went in circles. Then they would come back and circle again.” Jimenez also confirmed, “No details were given. We don’t know who he is,” and said, “They are following procedures but
kept people updated every hour.”
Jimenez, a veteran cruiser, added that such overboard incidents are rare.
