The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 12, 2026 due to thunderstorms impacting the area. The initial ground stop was issued until 2:30 p.m. and later extended to 4 p.m. before expiring. A second ground stop was enforced from 8:10 p.m. to 9 p.m. as thunderstorms persisted.

Flight Delays and Ground Stop Extensions

More than 900 flight delays were reported at Atlanta’s busiest airport by approximately 1 p.m. on July 12, 2026. The average delay time for affected flights was 40 minutes, with some delays reaching up to 75 minutes. Following the initial ground stop extensions, operations

briefly resumed before the FAA issued the evening ground stop to manage continuing storm disruptions.

Geographic Impact of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

Severe thunderstorm warnings and watches were issued across multiple counties in east Georgia, influencing FAA operational decisions. Morgan, Newton, Oconee, and Walton Counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings until 4:45 p.m. Habersham County’s warning extended until 6:15 p.m. Additionally, a severe thunderstorm watch covered a broad area including Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lanier, Lee, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, and Worth Counties until 9 p.m.

FAA Forecasts and Meteorologist Reports

The FAA cautioned there was a 30 to 60

percent chance of further ground stop extensions due to continuing thunderstorm activity. Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon forecasted a likelihood of scattered storms or isolated severe storms on Sunday afternoon, correlating with FAA’s operational pauses at the airport.

The ground stops at Hartsfield-Jackson prevented flights from departing during these periods, contributing to widespread delays and operational disruptions on July 12, 2026.
